Unlike the other offshore engineering supply vessels, the Viking Lady is owned by Eidesvik Offshore, a 3-year-old LNG fuel ship. It is the world's first commercial vessel to install a fuel cell as part of a propulsion system. In the fall of 2009, the "Viking Lady" successfully installed a 330KW power fuel cell power system and has successfully operated more than 18,500 hours. Based on this, the “Viking Lady” has become one of the most environmentally friendly ships in the world.
Further steps will now be taken to reduce ship emissions. Once the battery pack is installed, the “Viking Lady” will be powered by a hybrid fuel system, just like a hybrid fuel-powered car that has been around for several years. Moreover, compared to cars, ships may reduce more emissions and have a shorter return on investment.
DNV led the research project called FellowSHIP. Other participants in the project include shipowner Eidesvik Offshore and ship power supplier Wärtsilä. The next phase of the project will introduce energy storage capabilities into the energy system. This will further enable the benefits of the hybrid fuel system.
The potential benefit of the hybrid fuel system for the Viking Lady is that its engine and fuel cell work more smoothly and efficiently, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20%-30%, and even reducing it even more. Other exhaust emissions.
The shipping industry is currently facing high fuel cost pressures. Based on these actual costs, the return on investment of the hybrid fuel system is expected to be less than 2 years.
DNV project manager Bj?rn-Johan Vartdal said, “We know that hybrid fuel systems can reduce energy consumption. For example, in operation, the system will save energy consumption through dynamic positioning. When the port is in port, the ship will pass the fuel cell. Use only battery power to reduce emissions. This is a benefit in environmentally sensitive waters. It also has other benefits such as reduced mechanical maintenance costs and reduced noise and vibration."
A comprehensive test will be conducted to verify the benefits of the project in terms of emissions and cost savings. The hybrid fuel system will also model the details. The calibrated and validated process model will facilitate the simulation and optimization of future hybrid fuel systems.
At the same time, DNV developed the class specification for battery-powered ships, which is the world's first classification specification for the use of batteries as part of the propulsion power of the ship – including hybrid fuel solutions and pure battery-powered ships.
The project will be completed in 2013.
