Volvo Truck Launches Euro 6 Engine

Volvo Trucks has launched a tailor-made engine for the strict Euro 6 emission standards. Its nitrogen oxides and solid particulate emissions have dropped by 77% and 50%, respectively. Volvo Trucks will be the first to introduce the D13460 Mario VI engine. Now, one-third of the company's trucks are equipped with D13460 hp engines.

Proven Technology

This Volvo D13 Euro 6 engine is built on the proven Euro 5 engine technology. The new inline six-cylinder Euro 6 engine uses single fuel injectors and selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and diesel particulate filters (DPF) will also be fitted to meet new emission requirements. Volvo Trucks has used DPF in the United States and Japan for several years. Compared with Euro 5, the emission of nitrogen oxides from Euro 6 engines is reduced by 77% and the emissions of solid particulates are halved.

Focus on fuel economy and reliability

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) promotes the conversion of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas to harmless nitrogen and water vapor. It works in conjunction with a solid particle filter installed in a compact space. Solid particle filters will catch tiny particles during work and ignite them for reuse. When the engine does not have enough heat to heat the exhaust gas, EGR is mainly used to increase the exhaust gas temperature. SCR requires the best operating efficiency when the ambient temperature reaches at least 250°C. The traditional EGR cools the exhaust gas to reduce the engine temperature and thus reduces the nitrogen oxide emissions. The Euro 6 engine EGR will not perform exhaust gas recirculation in the highway cruise mode, so it will not increase fuel consumption under such operating conditions.
