China Reloads 30 Years: From "Introduction" to "Going Out"

"In the 1980s, China's heavy trucks were hard-pressed and had no independent intellectual property rights. It can be said that in the first 20 years of reform and opening up, China's heavy trucks have been spent on technology import, digestion, and absorption."

In 1983, approved by the State Council, the China Heavy-duty Truck Industry Association (formerly CNHTC Group) introduced the Austrian Steyr vehicle manufacturing technology (including engines, transmissions, and axles). This is a historic introduction of technology. Since then, China has completely changed the situation in which heavy-duty vehicles output is low, the level is low, the brand is single, separation between military and civilian, performance is backward, and it is not a series. It also ended the history of “heavy-door construction” in the heavy-duty auto industry in China. It is also the introduction of technology that not only enables the rapid development of China's heavy-duty truck industry, but also drives the development of China's heavy truck supporting parts and components industry.

"Because of the introduction and digestion and absorption of Steyr technology, such enterprises as China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, Shaanxi Heavy Duty Truck and SAIC Iveco Hongyan can develop rapidly. Although other heavy truck companies in China have not introduced Steyr technology in their entirety, In the development and design of the products, they have also learned more or less.” An industry expert told the “Commercial Automotive News” reporter.

Tan Xiuqing, an expert from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, also believes that the Steyr project introduces more than just vehicle technology, but also includes key assembly technologies for heavy commercial vehicles, such as engines, axles, transmissions, frames, and brake systems. And so on, this is of great significance to the heavy truck industry in China at that time. Many parts and components manufacturing plants that currently occupy an important market position in the country, such as Weichai Power, Fast, Hande, Bridges, and Zhuzhou Gears, are all developed on the basis of the introduction of Steyr technology. . In addition, the introduction and absorption of Steyr technology has also trained a large number of heavy-duty technical personnel in China.

"In the first 20 years of Steyr technology's entry into China, 'Steyr' has almost become synonymous with heavy trucks in China, and the heavy truck market is one of the largest Steyr products, and no one can. Until 2000, China The new power of the heavy truck market is beginning to rise."

Around 2000, the "Haoqiang" FAW Co., Ltd. and Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd. started to plan to enter the heavy truck market. Beiqi Foton is also eager to try. Valin Heavy Trucks, which introduced Japan's Mitsubishi technology, is also preparing to market. China Heavy Trucks ushered in an era of “hundred flowers”. Now China can not only see Steyr series of heavy truck products, Liberation Aowei and J6, Dongfeng Tianlong, Futian Auman, Liuzhou Automobile Balong, Valin heavy truck, Jianghuai Geerfa are also active in the Chinese heavy truck market.

With the increasing abundance of heavy-duty trucks in China, Steyr-based companies clearly feel that old technologies cannot fully meet the needs of market diversification and have begun to introduce and absorb new technologies for heavy-duty trucks abroad. For example, Sinotruk cooperated with Volvo Trucks to introduce production lines and technologies and developed the HOWO heavy truck, which became a major weapon for China National Heavy Duty Trucks to fight in the market; Shaanxi Automobile introduced the German Mann F2000 heavy truck technology and developed Germany. Dragon Series; Chongqing Hongyan embarked on a joint venture, with Iveco, SAIC Group, the establishment of SAIC Iveco Hongyan Company, and the introduction of Italy Iveco technology, and strive to win more market share.

"The development of Steyr technology is not in Europe but in China. It is the absorption and development of Steyr technology by China's heavy truck companies that allows China's heavy trucks to have the ability to participate in international market competition, and also allow Chinese products to be sold in the international market. On the 'big show boxing feet'."

Digestion, absorption, and re-innovation of foreign technologies have brought about qualitative changes in China's heavy trucks.

The comparative advantages of reliable product quality, excellent technology, and low price not only make China's own brand heavy trucks basically replace foreign brands in China, but also promote its opening up in the international market.

"Introducing and going out" is a pair of words that have never been separated in China's reform and opening up. The development of heavy trucks in China is precisely a microcosm of China's strategy of “bringing in and going out” through reform and opening up.

"Introduction" is to better "go out", and the development track of China's heavy trucks is also true. Since China's auto exports began to develop at a high speed in 2004, China’s heavy trucks have continued to expand into overseas markets, and their proportion in China’s auto export products has continuously increased. In the Middle East, Africa, Russia and other markets, there are heavy trucks in China. Especially in the developing countries, heavy trucks in China are gradually replacing used cars of European brands in the country.
