Sandvik Coromant Unveils Innovative Milling Method Based on Multi-axis Milling Machines

It is reported that Sandvik Coromant has introduced InvoMilling, an innovative milling method for multi-axis turning and milling machines in gear machining. This is a unique processing technology (patent pending and registered trademark) developed by Sandvik Coromant, and it is co-operated with Mori Seiki. Mori Seiki needs a specialized, relatively slow flexible gear manufacturing process that replaces the main applications on the market today. This innovative multi-axis solution is based on an advanced, yet simple, cutting strategy. This strategy is based on a standard multi-function machine tool that utilizes off-the-shelf cutting spur gears and helical gear cutting tools instead of hobbing.

It is understood that this processing method is a flexible production method for manufacturing spur gears and helical gears by using a standard disk-shaped milling cutter and a standard special face milling cutter. With the X-axis and B-axis or the Y-axis and B-axis, the cutting tool can be processed along the involute path. This new method can be used on DMG/Mori Seiki NT machines. This multi-axis milling center enables simultaneous milling and turning.

In addition, the car-milling machine can be directly used for machining gears. The InvoMilling method can be used to combine slot milling and turning and milling operations simultaneously. The same tool can be used to machine gears with any helix angle, including involute and non-involute profiles. The number of cuts depends on the gear size and the size of the tool used. InvoMilling can play the role of high-precision modern machine tool control and CNC machine tools, as well as the accuracy of the cutting tool, so that you can process precision gears and semi-finished gear required for precision grinding.

Modern indexable blade technology has made the new method a success. With InvoMilling method, the quality of the gear teeth can reach DIN 3962 level 6 or above. In addition, the correct use of the tool on a sufficiently rigid machine tool can achieve a surface finish of better than Rz 3 microns. InvoMilling methods using precise tool paths and precision tools can produce very competitive high-quality gears. With the introduction of InvoMilling, Sandvik Coromant underwent a technological upgrade to produce high-quality gears using standard-use machine tools, significantly reducing processing costs, increasing flexibility and greatly reducing lead times.
