Digital Equipment Making Teenagers Emotional Dysplasia

Young people may lose reading emotions because of the ability of their digital devices, such as smartphones, TVs and tablets, a new study finds. Children's social skills may decline because they spend less time interacting face-to-face, increasing the use of digital media, according to a study by the University of California, Los Angeles. "Sensitivity reduces emotional clues and loses the ability to understand other people's emotions," said Patricia Greenfield, a distinguished professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a senior author of research.
Psychologists studied two groups of sixth-graders, from Public Schools in Southern California: 51 lived together for five days, 54 people from the same school. Students are not allowed to use electronic devices, and many students find the first few days challenging and adapt quickly, according to the counselor. At the beginning of the study, students at both ends of the study were evaluated to identify other people's emotions, in photo and video skills.
The students expressed 48 images, which were the face of happiness, sadness, anger or fear, and asked to determine their own feelings. They also watched videos that interacted with each other and described the emotions of the characters. In one scene, students take the exam and submit it to their teacher; one of them is confident and excited, the other is anxious. In another scenario, a student was very much saddened after being excluded from the call.
The children who once worked in training camps were compared with those who continued to use their media devices after they read non-verbal clues such as facial emotions and improved their emotional ability significantly. "You can learn non-verbal emotional clues from the way you can learn from face-to-face communication," said Yaldau Urs, senior researcher and lead author of the Children's Digital Media Center at the University of California, Los Angeles.
"If you do not practice face-to-face communication, you may lose important social skills," Urs said. Urs said that the emoji is an alternative face-to-face communication: "We are social animals and we need free time for equipment."
