EU invests 2.4 million euros to develop universal standards for smart meters

[China Instrument Network Industry Focus] It is reported that the European Union's most-invested global technology development plan, the EU's Seventh Framework Program, has recently formulated the EU's use of smart metering standards as one of its plans. The project plans to invest 2.4 million euros to complete the "open meter" project in two and a half years. The project is expected to produce 6.3-7.2 billion euros in the market.

Smart meters have been widely used in various fields. For example, by providing real-time and intuitive energy consumption information, smart meters allow users to more easily and reasonably control the allocation and use of energy, which also opens up new avenues for the development of new energy-saving technologies. Smart meters with real-time display of consumption information such as oil and gas, electricity, etc., have always been regarded by the European Union as one of the important innovations in achieving energy-saving emission reduction targets. However, due to the lack of general-purpose smart metering standards, smart meter products from different vendors cannot realize interoperability, which seriously hampers the development of the EU smart metering industry.

To this end, the EU's seventh R&D framework invested 2.4 million euros to launch the two-and-a-half-year OPENMETER project. A research team consisting of R&D staff from Spain (General Coordinator), France, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and other countries targeted the needs of the European Union for the construction of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), which includes the joint venture of the public sector and manufacturing. 19 companies, including business, research institutes, and standardization organizations, jointly researched and designed a set of draft general standards for smart metering supporting oil, electricity, water, and heat. Recently, all parties involved in the project formally adopted the standard and are actively promoting it to become the EU and even international standards. Some of the EU's major public utilities have accepted the standard and are working on a large-scale deployment of smart meter business plans.

The common standards solve the interoperability issues that hinder the development of smart meters. This not only enables interoperability between different vendors' products, but also promotes the integration and application of new technologies in smart meters, thereby creating more advanced smart meters. Products lay a solid foundation for the EU to form a competitive smart meter market. It is estimated that the current size of the EU's entire smart meter market is approximately 11 billion euros, of which the market scale of technical products that can be promoted through the project's achievements is about 70-80%, reaching 6.3-7.2 billion euros.
