Seiko has developed a small, lightweight electric tilting retracting steering column that will be exhibited at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show (Public Open Day: October 27th - November 11th, 2007). In the past, the dedicated motors of the tilt mechanism and the retracting mechanism were independently operated. This time, through the centralized drive mechanism, the two motors were linked to achieve small size and light weight. The goal is to deliver the steering column equipped with the mechanism to the market in 2010.
The new tilt retracting mechanism is a unit with a size of 100 × 160 × 35mm, the number of parts is reduced by 10%, and the column weight is reduced by 16%. In addition, by changing the linearly arranged spring portions to parallel arrangement, the rigidity is increased by 20% compared with the conventional product, and the natural vibration frequency is increased by 10%, and the vibration at the time of steering is reduced. In addition, the load of each motor is reduced by the cooperation of the two motors, and the motor power consumption is reduced by 40%.
