Atom-grade coating engineering technology for prolonging tool life

Tool developers can design tools and improve tool performance by controlling variables such as thickness, purity, structural integrity, smoothness, and chemical composition of tool coatings.

Don Graham, Manager of Turning Products Division, Seco Tool Inc., said: “The tool is now undergoing new changes, and the orientation of the crystals has a major impact on the tool. Some of the coatings on the tool are anisotropic. This is the same as the texture of the wood. To a varying extent, depending on the force applied, whether it is in the same direction or in the opposite direction of the material grain, the micro-crystals of the tool coating material will follow different directions. While showing different characteristics, Seco Tool Company has developed a new process that uses this new process to control the orientation of the grains."

The company developed a new "Duratomic" tool coating. They control alumina crystals individually. In a sense, the material is controlled on an atomic level to produce a tool coating. A tool with such a coating can process a wide range of black metal materials and its processing effect is better than that of the company. Any previously used alumina coating is good. The highest hardness of the previous coating can only reach 27GPa, but the new coating reaches 30GPa, just because of the use of the inherent alignment of the crystal, so that it reaches the highest hardness. The company's TP2500 grade inserts use this coating on its matrix material, so this tool also has a wide range of applications. As a result, the tool can process cast iron and various steel materials, including stainless steel, and prolong the service life of the tool, allowing the processing plant to realize greater potential, process various materials, and reduce the amount of tooling required Blade inventory quantity.
Mr. Graham said: "The increase in tool life is not only due to the increased hardness of the tool. According to the cutting test, this coating also makes the toughness of the tool significantly higher. This new coating allows the tool to be in colder conditions. Under the cutting process, this effect is something we did not foresee."

From the electron micrograph of this electron microscope, it can be seen that the high-level crystals in the alumina coating (upper layer) are distributed in parallel. The crystals are arranged in the direction of their highest hardness. A small amount of separation from this figure may also have a substantial effect on increasing the toughness of the coating, making it less susceptible to fracture.

When this new coating replaces the previous alumina coating, if the 4140 steel was also machined, the past operating temperature was 915 degrees Celsius, and it is now only 880 degrees Celsius. Both temperatures seem not to be low, but Mr. Graham pointed out: "The wear resistance of the tool depends on the temperature change, especially in this range, the temperature change has a great influence on the wear characteristics of the tool. Cutting the temperature by 35 degrees Celsius can greatly increase the wear resistance of the tool, further extending the service life of the tool."
“The mechanism for this cooling effect is not yet fully understood. Controlling the orientation of the crystals does not necessarily improve the smoothness of the surface, but this change in any case will cause the tool it produces to feel a smoother surface during cutting.”
