The localization of environmental protection flame retardants for engineering plastics is imminent

The environmentally friendly flame retardant FR-245 for engineering plastics will bid farewell to the history of all imports. An annual output of 3,000 tons of FR-245 device will be put into operation on March 22 in Guangdong Baibaishun Petrochemical Co., Ltd. Zhou Zhengyu, secretary-general of the China Flame Retardant Society, said in an interview yesterday that the commissioning of the project marked the industrialization of FR-245, an environmentally friendly flame retardant for engineering plastics in China.
Since the European Union and the United States issued directives to phase out the use of decabromodiphenyl ether and decabromodiphenylethane last year, the world's petrochemical industry has been looking for environmentally friendly flame retardants. The production technology of environment-friendly flame retardants for engineering plastics has become a hot and difficult issue of concern in various countries. FR-245 is an ideal alternative to flame retardants designed for engineering plastics such as polyester, ABS, impact-resistant polystyrene and polycarbonate.
FR-245, also known as tricyanurate, was first developed by Israel’s Dead Sea Group to replace depleted decabromodiphenyl ether and decabromodiphenylethane. FR-245 is more environmentally friendly than decabromodiphenyl ether, and has better lightfastness and yellowing properties; it has better flowability and better color appearance than decabromodiphenylethane. FR-245 has also been sought after in the Chinese market. In the past five years, the domestic demand for the five major engineering plastics markets has maintained a growth rate of 30.3%, and will continue to grow rapidly in the coming years. Experts predict that by 2010, the total demand for engineering plastics will reach 1.67 million tons. Such a huge market will inevitably increase the demand for special flame retardants.
Prior to this, the only international manufacturer of environmentally friendly flame retardants for engineering plastics was the Dead Sea Group. The domestic production of environmentally friendly flame retardant Jiangsu Haohua Fine Chemical Co., Ltd. uses the Japanese technology, but also must use all Japanese raw materials, and thus the product prices are higher. Other domestic companies are also conducting research, but no products have been available. Therefore, the market size of China’s 100,000 tons is all dependent on imports, and the price is 50,000 yuan/ton.
According to Zhou Zhengyu, the 3,000-ton/year FR-245 industrialized production line of Dongguan Baibaishun Petrochemical Co., Ltd. is also at the leading level internationally. This technology, with the support of the China Flame Retardant Society, completed a pilot test on January 30, 2007, and was fully self-developed. Raw materials, intermediates, and final products have no impact on the environment. In accordance with the premise of green chemical production, product purity can reach 99.5% or more, and it can completely replace imported products, and the price is much lower than imported products. This kind of environment-friendly special flame retardant is conducive to large-scale promotion in the field of engineering plastics.
