First, check the electrification of the conductor

Let the metal ball of the electroscope that has been positively charged be close to the conductor of the high-voltage electroscope to be inspected. If the angle of the gold leaf of the electroscope becomes larger, it means that the conductor under inspection is positively charged due to the repulsion of the same-level charge. The electric charge on the metal cone of the electroscope is transferred to the gold foil to increase the opening angle. If the angle of the gold foil of the electroscope decreases, it means that the conductor under inspection is negatively charged or not. This is due to the attraction of the opposite-phase charge, which causes the positive charge on the gold foil to shift toward the metal sphere and make the angle of divergence smaller. In this case, The inspected conductor can be placed close to the metal ball of the electroscope that is known to be negatively charged. If the angle of the gold foil becomes large, it can be confirmed that the conductor under inspection must be negatively charged.

Second, compare the potential of different conductors
Connect the metal ball of the same uncharged electroscope with the positively charged conductors A and B, and observe the size of the angle of the gold leaf. When the angle is large, the potential of the connected conductor is high. If both conductors are negatively charged, the potential of the connected conductor is low when the opening angle is large. This is because the amount of charge transferred from an electrified body to the electroscope is not determined by the amount of charge carried by the charged body, but rather by the potential difference between the charged body and the electroscope when it is not connected. At the beginning, the electroscope is not charged. We can specify its potential to be zero. Although the metal balls and metal rods of the electroscope are isolated conductors, they also have certain capacitance. When the live body is connected to the metal ball with a wire, the charge of the live body flows to the electroscope so that the potential of the electroscope gradually increases, and does not mean that the amount of charged electric charge is large. Therefore, we can not compare the amount of charge carried by different charged bodies according to the size of the gold foil opening angle. At most, we can compare the charge of the same charged body at which time.

Third, check whether the conductor is charged

The conductor to be inspected is directly contacted with the metal ball of the electroscope or connected with the wire to observe whether the gold foil of the electroscope is opened or not, and it can be determined whether the conductor is electrified. If the conductor is charged, due to the electrostatic induction, different types of charges are induced on the metal ball and the gold foil of the electroscope to open the gold foil.
