China's first set of carbon tetrachloride conversion to tetrachloroethylene plant put into operation

On August 29th, Yanhua Southwest Chemical Co., Ltd. took the lead in converting CTC to PCE, and realized industrial production, filling the gap in domestic CTC conversion PCE technology. After the project is completed and put into production, it is expected to process 10,000 tons of carbon tetrachloride per year, and the annual sales income can reach nearly 100 million yuan. The project will serve as an exemplary role for domestic methane chloride enterprises to effectively dispose of carbon tetrachloride.

Since the 1930s, refrigerants, electronic circuit boards, cleaning agents for precision metal parts and fire extinguishing agents for refrigeration equipment have used a large amount of synthetic chlorofluorochemicals. The destruction of the ozone layer by such substances has become a major global environmental problem. Carbon tetrachloride is a type of methane chloride and is mainly used to produce fluorine refrigerants CFC-11 and CFC-12. In order to protect the ozone layer, China has pledged to completely phase out CFC-11 and CFC-12 in 2010. In recent years, China has accelerated the phase-out of carbon tetrachloride and CFC-11 and CFC-12, and stopped importing carbon tetrachloride.

However, in the current methane chloride production unit, a certain amount of carbon tetrachloride is produced in combination regardless of the process. To solve the incidental output of carbon tetrachloride, there are mainly two disposal methods: one is incineration, but this causes waste of resources, and the disposal cost per ton is as high as 3,000 yuan; the second is the conversion, using carbon tetrachloride as raw material. Producing the chemicals needed in the market, this is the most active and practical application of waste recycling.

Yanhua Southwest Company is the largest methane chloride commodity production base in China. According to the actual production situation of the company, the company decided to invest in the construction of 12,000 tons/year tetrachloroethylene unit to convert carbon tetrachloride. The project started on August 21, 2006. On August 4, 2007, the project was completed and the process was completed to produce quality products.

Tetrachloroethylene is an important special solvent, and the current market demand is growing steadily. In particular, dry cleaning grade tetrachloroethylene is totally dependent on imports.
